Position Title: Artistic Director – Santa Barbara Master Chorale
Organization Overview: The Santa Barbara Master Chorale is a community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit choral ensemble dedicated to preserving and advancing the choral arts on California’s Central Coast. Founded in 1984, the Chorale presents concerts spanning classical masterworks to contemporary and multicultural repertoire. Our mission is to enrich the cultural fabric of Santa Barbara through artistic excellence, community collaboration, and educational outreach.
Position Summary: The Artistic Director provides musical and artistic leadership for the Santa Barbara Master Chorale. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director is responsible for shaping the ensemble’s artistic vision, directing rehearsals and performances, selecting repertoire, collaborating with guest artists, and engaging with the Santa Barbara community.

Community Choir Director - Hillcrest Retirement Community

Position available: Director for Retirement Community Choir (East LA County/LaVerne).

Job Description: Director retiring after mid-December 2025 concert. Averages 30-35 members. SATB, some music readers, some not. Non-auditioned, but they take it quite seriously and sing their hearts out.  Current program is two Friday evening concerts per year for the community and guests, December and May, with a 14-week season of weekly rehearsals in the community’s chapel. Ample music library with Excel file inventory.  Terrific support from a brilliant collaborative pianist beloved by the singers.  Small stipend available.  Great opportunity for newer conductors or late-career professionals willing to adapt to the needs of these senior singers, who will inspire you with their enthusiasm and dedication to community singing as a lifelong art form. The Trilogy Vineyard Singers are seeking a Choir Director and Accompanist. Both are paid positions.

The Trilogy Vineyard Singers, a 10-year community choir of about 40 singers, are based at Trilogy at the Vineyards in Brentwood, CA. The singers have a range of music reading abilities and the ensemble supplements director-led rehearsals with weekly sectional meetings, led by volunteer section leaders. The Trilogy Vineyard Singers rehearse on Thursdays in Brentwood from 4:30-6:30 PM, with approximately 13 rehearsals prior to a dress rehearsal and two concerts. The ensemble hopes to begin rehearsals in October 2025 for a concert in January 2026.

JOB DESCRIPTION
 
The Chorus Director is responsible for the overall musical product. They provide the artistic and musical vision, leadership, and inspiration, as well as the technical and teaching skills to continue to advance BASC’s artistic excellence. They agree to abide by Sweet Adelines International, Regional, and Chapter Bylaws, plus Regional and Chapter Standing Rules.  RESPONSIBILITIES  Exercise final authority for all decisions pertaining to rehearsals, performances, shows, and competition, delegating responsibility when appropriate.  Appoint a Music Team consisting of section leaders, Assistant Directors, visual communication leaders, and other support staff. Plan and conduct weekly Thursday evening chorus rehearsals (2.5 hours) and any additional rehearsals, including all-day rehearsals, according to the chorus's goals and calendar. Rehearsals include teaching the selected music, and providing a variety of activities and education in vocal skills, music education, and barbershop style performing.
For scheduled vacations and emergencies, the Director will make arrangements for an Assistant Director or Music Team member to conduct the rehearsal. Prepare and direct all musical aspects of chorus performances and shows, working with appointed chorus members on the non-musical performance aspects. Make arrangements for an Assistant Director to fill in if necessary. Prepare and lead the chorus in Regional and International competitions. 
Work collaboratively with the Music Team in the selection of music and arrangements to be performed. Oversee the purchase and tracking of sheet music and licenses. Purchase or prepare learning tracks for all music. Serve as the Musical Coordinator on the Management Team, participating in team meetings and management of chorus business, including budgets, goals, policies, procedures, team building, calendaring, and membership recruitment.
Plan and conduct extra rehearsals, including selecting and scheduling outside coaches, as needed, to boost skills and prepare for competitions.  Provide education/training to existing and new members in singing four-part harmony in the barbershop style. Provide input to and guidance in all aspects of visual communication, including choreography, characterization, staging, costumes, and hair and make-up. Decide on riser standing positions. Ensure the quality of chorus, smaller group performances, and quartets through appropriate performance qualification processes. Promote quartet development and approve performance readiness. Work collaboratively with the Music Team to determine the audition process. Attend SAI and Regional training sessions for music directors.

Proven and demonstrated technical musical skills. Barbershop style skills, or the willingness to become trained in the barbershop style. Willingness to pursue further development of musical and directing skills by attending training classes/seminars. SAI Director Certification or willingness to attain SAI Director Certification within 12 months. Strong teaching, rehearsal, and delivery skills. Strong leadership and communication skills—both verbal and written. Ability to create an environment that encourages self-improvement and participation. Outstanding interpersonal skills. DCA is seeking an energetic, innovative Artistic Director who will build on our tradition of musical excellence, grow our membership of experienced amateur singers, enhance our repertoire, expand our audience, and assist in developing a firm financial foundation for the choir’s future. Responsibilities and Duties
The Artistic Director provides overall artistic direction for DCA concerts and other activities consistent with DCA’s Mission and Vision Statements and in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
• Plan in a timely manner and obtain Board approval of the programming of annual concert seasons, with a range of repertoire that will be interesting and challenging for singers, and enjoyable and exciting for audiences.
​• Serve as ex officio member of Board of Directors and attend monthly meetings of the Board.
• Prepare estimated budgets for concert seasons in terms of costs for instrumentalists and soloists, if necessary, as well as any necessary costs to purchase music scores.
• Conduct weekly choir rehearsals and at least one 5-hour Saturday retreat rehearsal in the fall and in the spring in preparation for concerts.
• Collaborate productively with DCA accompanist to provide a positive rehearsal environment and an efficient, effective rehearsal.
• Encourage singer participation and preparation to achieve high performance standards, including locating (or creating) appropriate practice aids by part.
• Conduct all performances of DCA, including any given on special occasions.
• Participate in local media outreach to recruit singers and promote concerts.
• Assist in preparation of programs, flyers, and other advertising for concerts, including writing program notes as required for each concert.
• Assist in developing and implementing fundraising strategies, such as silent auctions, etc.
• Audition singers for membership in DCA and make determinations of the eligibility of each applicant.
• Provide ongoing instruction in vocal production and choral techniques to the chorus with the goal of improving the artistic quality of the choir.
• When necessary, audition, hire, and prepare instrumentalists, professional soloists, and non-member singers, and provide for fee negotiation with the Board of Directors.
• Assist the Board in developing new streams of revenue, finding new venues for performances, and developing new collaborations with other choirs and musical organizations in Contra Costa County and nearby locations.
• Perform any other duties that may be agreed upon between the Board and the Artistic Director.

Contract and Compensation
The Artistic Director is a part-time position as an independent contractor for a term from August 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026, with the potential for annual renewal. Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications, with potential compensation ranging from $12,000 to $18,000 annually. DCA is a California non-profit.


Qualifications
• Professional experience as a choral director.
• Appropriate music degree or equivalent professional experience.
• Organizational and planning skills.
• Ability to work productively with singers of different levels of musical experience and ability.
• Good people skills, including ability to establish rapport with choir members and audiences.
• Extensive knowledge of choral literature and experience conducting both traditional masterpieces and contemporary choral repertoire, including music of historically underrepresented composers and styles.
• NOTE: Excellent keyboard skills, as well as technical ability and experience with streaming concerts and zoom rehearsals, would be a plus.

Position Summary
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis, a liberal, spiritual, and vibrant 250+ member congregation, seeks a creative and collaborative Music Director to lead our music ministry into its next chapter. Working closely with our newly called minister and worship team, the Music Director will shape the musical and spiritual life of our community through the coordination of our adult choir, handbell choir, and its emerging house band and children's choir programs. We seek a skilled musician and leader who can honor our congregation's love of traditional hymn singing while thoughtfully expanding our musical horizons. The ideal candidate brings expertise in diverse musical traditions and styles, supports our commitment to build a multicultural Beloved Community. As we live into our 8th Principle work of dismantling racism and other systems of oppression, we look for someone who approaches musical leadership with cultural awareness and a dedication to equity and inclusion. The Music Director conducts our adult choir, manages the music program budget, and provides collaborative leadership to our volunteer musicians. Responsibilities and Duties
Ministry:
• Embrace diverse styles, genres, and musical experiences to lead us towards our mission / bring us closer to our principles and values, while also maintaining historical UU-worship styles of music. Able to navigate issues related to race and identity with a deep commitment to advancing the values of equity and inclusion.
• Lead multiracial, multicultural, multigenerational choral and/or instrumental groups from both written and aural learning traditions in a variety of musical styles
Worship:
• Collaborate with the Minister, worship team, and/or other worship service leaders and musicians (Juuliebells Co-Directors, Collaborative Pianist, worship band, and guest musicians, etc.) in the creation of worship services.
• In collaboration with worship team, select upcoming music (including pre-recorded) that supports the worship theme.
• Collaborate with Minister, AV Operators, others on technical needs for music.
• Provide or arrange for music for non-Sunday services (ex: Solstice, Blue Christmas, Christmas Eve, ordinations and installations).
• Support and develop the experience of congregational singing.
• Recruit, schedule, direct, and support in-house and guest musicians in selecting and creating worship music.
• In the absence of a staff Collaborative Pianist, provide or coordinate accompaniment for church services and choir rehearsals.
• Plan for absences by scheduling music programming that does not require a director.
• Create contingency music plan should any last minute need arise.
Choir Direction:
• Develop and grow the ministry of the choir and other small music groups by creating a space for participants to experience music as spiritual practice and grow in worship leadership.
• Promote a compassionate community among choir members that leans into living the church’s covenant and fosters a brave and cruelty-free environment for singers and musicians.
• Make song selections and purchase choir music that enhances the experience of those who sing and those who attend worship.
• Lead rehearsals that train singers in vocal techniques, delivery, and performance.
• Maintain communication, practice files for choir access, and other administration for choir.
Supervision:
• Manage, coordinate, and guide music staff and volunteers in keeping with the responsibilities of this position: select, train, support, and supervise.
• Collaborate with Minister to develop systems and processes for supervising current and future music staff and volunteers; manage music programming throughout the year.
• Supervise volunteers to cull, maintain, digitize, and update the music library.
Administration:
• In consultation with the Minister, prepare and submit a music budget for each coming church year.
• Oversee piano maintenance (climate control in buildings, schedule tuning, etc.).
• Ensure congregational compliance with copyright laws.
• Maintain active AUUMM membership; attend annual meeting, as possible.
• Ongoing outreach to other UU churches, local congregations and/or music communities and ensembles.
• Maintain a list of musicians for weddings, memorials, etc.
• Participate in weekly staff meetings.
• Attend supervision meetings with Minister Other.
• As assigned, provide or arrange for music for non-worship services (e.g. church member’s weddings and memorials, etc.).
• Plan and implement one Music Sunday service each year.
• Periodically lead singing during Children’s Religious Education.
• Lead “MUUsic at Noon” Program: book musicians, promote program, host, arrange payment, stay within budget (program to be reevaluated June 2025).
• Bring vision, leadership, creativity, and energy to the music program.
• Grow awareness of UUCD and its music ministry beyond our walls.


Qualifications
• Demonstrated experience leading an adult choir.
• Knowledge of and expertise in methods of choral conducting.
• Ability to teach choral parts to choir members who may not read music.
• Strong musical abilities, including proficiency in playing an instrument (e.g., guitar or piano) and vocal skills.
• Ability to work effectively and respectfully with the Minister, staff, choir and other music volunteers, congregants, and the public.

The Choir Director will support the mission and vision of FCC by directing the Sunday choir ministry in conjunction with the overall Sunday worship plan for the church. They will collaborate with the Worship Director for the overall direction, leadership development, recruitment, calendar, communication, resources, and systems needed for this ministry at FCC Oakland. While the choir takes an approximate 10-week break over the summer, the Choir Director may continue to work some weekly hours during this time.

• Collaborate with the Worship Director to integrate the FCC Choir into the overall Sunday worship plan for the church.
• Direct the FCC Choir for Sunday Worship and special FCC musical events.

• Meet periodically with the Worship Director and/or the Lead Pastor to review and assess the Choir’s ministry.
• Attend weekly staff meetings as scheduled.
• Participate in additional FCC events and ministries as needed.
• Attend retreats and training experiences designed for church staff.
• Participate in Sunday worship on dates scheduled with the choir.


Qualifications
• A profession of personal faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord
• Acceptance of the Job Description
• Commitment to the Mission, Vision, and Values of FCC Oakland
• Adherence to the FCC Leadership Covenant and Staff Code of Conduct
• Shall sign and acknowledge receipt of the FCC Employee Handbook and all FCC policies
• Supporting the ministry priorities of the Evangelical Covenant Church (
www.covchurch.org) and the Pacific Southwest Conference (www.pswc.org)

Education, Skills, and Experience
• Undergraduate Degree or postgraduate preferred.
• At least 3 years’ experience or equivalent leading or assistant leading in a mid-size church setting.
• Demonstrates cross-cultural proficiency
• Competence in, and willingness to learn, appropriate software or technology skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency in administrative tasks including organization, planning, delegating, working within a budget and communication.
• Relationship building/people skills.
• Self-motivation and initiation
• Ability to deliver results, facilitate and influence others and problem solve beyond temporary solutions.
• Supervisory experience preferred.
• English language proficiency in both spoken and written form
• Strong organizational skills
• Integrity, Flexibility, and Teamwork.
