Director of Music Ministries (DMM) - Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Church (OCUUC)

Job Description: Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Church (OCUUC) in Costa Mesa, CA is recruiting for a part-time choral Director of Music Ministries (DMM).  OCUUC’s motto is “Many different beliefs, one loving community.”  We are a Welcoming Community: we welcome people of all beliefs, races, sexual orientations, and gender identities.  Our choir is comprised of about 15 enthusiastic volunteer singers of various ability levels, and performs music in a wide range of genres and styles in our thriving music program.  Please see our website at ocuuc.org to familiarize yourself with our church.  We hold hybrid services in person and on Zoom.  You can have a look at our YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@OrangeCoastUU to get an idea of what our services are like from the Zoom point of view.  To be successful in the position, the DMM will need to be comfortable with Zoom, and with Google Drive, Slides, and Sheets.
Applicant Requirements/Qualifications: The essential duties of the Director of Music Ministries will be:  • Work with the Minister to choose anthems and congregational songs for each weekly service  • Rehearse with choir on Thursday evenings except mid-June through mid-August  • Direct choir in worship services three Sunday mornings per month except mid-June through mid-August  • Participate in technical rehearsal/run-through for worship service on Sunday mornings  Other duties of the Director of Music Ministries include:  • Train volunteer lay leaders or arrange for paid subs to lead worship music when DMM is absent  • Collaborate with AV team that creates the slideshows for Zoom and runs the camera, slideshow, and soundboard in the sanctuary on Sundays  • Coordinate congregational AV volunteers & AV technician(s)  • Facilitate collaboration in the weekly creation of worship services by maintaining the Worship Planning Matrix and generating the Order of Service spreadsheet  • Work with the Worship Committee, Music Committee, and other church committees to plan programs and activities that will enrich congregational life and reach out into the community with music  • Participate as music leader at Camp DeBenneville Pines’ early fall all-church camp approximately once every two years  • Provide and coordinate occasional in-house performance opportunities such as Open Mic Night, Music Under the Stars  • Maintain contact with music colleagues in other churches and with the wider denomination through involvement through the Association of Unitarian Universalist Music Ministries (AUUMM), including attending the annual national AUUMM conference  The Director of Music Ministries reports directly to the Minister of OCUUC.  Minimum qualification requirements are a Bachelor’s degree in Music, or the equivalent; experience rehearsing and directing a choir; and demonstrated familiarity and comfort working with technology, including Zoom and Google Drive, Sheets, and Slides.  Salary range for this part-time position is $19,000 - $23,000 annually, dependent on qualifications, plus some benefits.  A paid accompanist, a private office with a piano, and an extensive music library are provided.  Desired start date is November, 2023.  Please email your resumé and a cover letter, as well as any questions that you may have about the position, to [email protected].  We look forward to hearing from you!
