San Francisco City Chorus - Artistic Director
Job Description: It is the role of the Artistic Director to select repertoire and order music, to annotate music to be performed, as needed; to provide a rehearsal schedule for the season; to conduct regular Wednesday night rehearsals, additional rehearsals as needed, some sectionals, dress rehearsals, and caroling rehearsals; to conduct concerts and large group Christmas caroling engagements; to arrange for musical accompaniment and soloists for concerts; to arrange recording of concerts; to audition new Chorus members; and to attend monthly Board of Director meetings as a non-voting guest; these are currently held via Zoom.   THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AND THE ACCOMPANIST. The Artistic Director should be in frequent discussions with the Accompanist, asking his/her advice on possible repertoire and just being consistently in touch. Repertoire decisions made in tandem with the Accompanist are always preferable. The Artistic Director is a partner with the Accompanist, whose responsibility it is to follow the instructions of the Artistic Director during a rehearsal, occasionally offering additional information—two heads being always better than one. The Accompanist will also be prepared, as needed, to take over direction of sectionals or whatever parts are assigned during a Wednesday night rehearsal.

Applicant Requirements/Qualifications: A seasoned musical director of a chorus who has  ◊ Five or more years of conservatory training or the equivalent ◊ Comprehensive knowledge of choral repertoire and methods ◊ Experience directing singers of diverse musical abilities and backgrounds ◊ Experience with vocal coaching ◊ Experience conducting major choral works with keyboard or orchestral accompaniment ◊ Demonstrated ability in program repertoire and concert planning  ◊ Skill in working with a volunteer board of directors on all aspects related to each season’s activities ◊ Time commitment availability for  o Weekly Wednesday night rehearsals 7 to 9:30 pm at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 201 Eucalyptus Dr., San Francisco o Sectional and dress rehearsals o Two concerts a year (usually April or May and November) plus 2+ large-group caroling events o A Sing-Along Messiah in early December, with our all-volunteer orchestra o Auditions at the start of each season  o Monthly board meetings via Zoom, usually Sunday evenings 7 to 8:30 pm o Preparations for the above  Together with Chorus leadership, the Artistic Director ensures that members have, in a timely fashion, everything they need to sing well: scores, a rehearsal schedule with homework assignments for the season, recommended YouTube recordings, audio practice files, staging information for dress rehearsals and concert, and above all a friendly atmosphere in which to learn and sing.
