Job Description: Reconciliation Singers Voices of Peace (RSVP), based in the Sacramento CA area, is seeking an Artistic Director. Founded 23 years ago, this select, auditioned group of 18-22 singers presents two concert sets per year, partnering with local charities and programming repertoire that reflects that charity’s mission; from vocal jazz to classical choral literature to contemporary music, to gospel and folk tunes.
Applicant Requirements/Qualifications:
  1. BA or BM in music,
  2. Experience working with adult choirs or vocal ensembles,
  3. Experience working with volunteer singers, including many professional musicians,
  4. Experience in developing a cohesive, repertoire-based blended choral sound,
  5. Experience developing repertoire that includes all genres of choral/vocal music, especially vocal jazz,
  6. Strong interest in using music as a vehicle for both quality performances and community outreach/non-profit support,
  7. Public speaking experience,
  8. Solo and/or choral singing experience and knowledge of vocal mechanics, techniques and pedagogy
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. MA or MM in choral conducting,
  2. Experience working with charity organizations,
  3. Member, ACDA or similar choral conducting organization
Responsibilities:
  1. Audition singers as needed; maintain quality singers for consistent, blended choral sound,
  2. Develop links with local musical organizations for concert collaborations,
  3. Set concert dates (2-4 performances per concert set) and venues (w/Event Coordinator),
  4. Choose music and concert concepts/themes for each concert year,
  5. Order music; utilize current music library (w/Assistant to AD),
  6. Prepare and distribute music to singers (w/Assistant to AD),
  7. Choose guest artists; hire guest musicians,
  8. Provide recordings of repertoire, whenever possible,
  9. Run weekly rehearsals (currently on Monday evenings, August-May),
  10. Participate in Board meetings (held once monthly in person or virtually),
  11. Book special performances, based on singer interest and fundraising needs,
  12. Help coordinate recording sessions; assist with editing recordings (w/Sound Technician)
Expectations:
  • Personable: approachable by singers and audience,
  • Minimize conducting group during performances,
  • Rehearsals friendly but efficient,
  • Little note-bashing at rehearsals: singers will learn their notes on their own for the most part,
  • Respecting and enhancing RSVP’s mission to support local charities,
  • Enjoy the challenges of repertoire programming, including programming music from other countries,
  • Speaking to audiences: describing music choices/backgrounds, etc.,
  • Respect the musicianship and experiences of singers,
  • Minimum keyboard skills (play one part at a time),
  • Act as public representative of RSVP with media
