Job Description Develop and implement the artistic vision for the Chorale in alignment with its mission and values. Demonstrate the ability to select and interpret a wide range of concert choral literature, both traditional and contemporary. Select repertoire that balances artistic excellence, audience appeal, and diversity of style, culture, and era. Plan, rehearse, and conduct at least two major concerts annually (plus special events as approved by the Board) that reflect prepared lesson plans and effective score study. Demonstrate effective conducting and teaching techniques that lead to appropriate chorale expression. Establish creative and long-range musical objectives and identify and implement specific strategies and actions to achieve these objectives. Collaborate with the Board and committees on concert planning, budgeting, marketing, and community engagement. Serve as the public artistic face of the Chorale with donors, patrons, media, and community partners. Recruit, inspire, and retain volunteer singers; cultivate an inclusive and supportive artistic environment. Assist in development efforts by participating in fundraising events and donor cultivation.

Position Title: Artistic Director – Santa Barbara Master Chorale
Organization Overview: The Santa Barbara Master Chorale is a community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit choral ensemble dedicated to preserving and advancing the choral arts on California’s Central Coast. Founded in 1984, the Chorale presents concerts spanning classical masterworks to contemporary and multicultural repertoire. Our mission is to enrich the cultural fabric of Santa Barbara through artistic excellence, community collaboration, and educational outreach.
Position Summary: The Artistic Director provides musical and artistic leadership for the Santa Barbara Master Chorale. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director is responsible for shaping the ensemble’s artistic vision, directing rehearsals and performances, selecting repertoire, collaborating with guest artists, and engaging with the Santa Barbara community.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate effective conducting and teaching techniques that lead to appropriate chorale expression.

Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in choral conducting or equivalent professional experience.
  • Demonstrated success in conducting community, university, or professional choruses with instrumental/orchestral ensembles in performances of major works.
  • Strong knowledge of choral repertoire across historical and cultural traditions.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with volunteer singers of varying skill levels.
  • Superior communication, collaboration,organizational, and motiviational skills.
  • Solid understanding of vocal pedagogy.
  • Conducting abilities of the highest artistic standard, excellent choral teaching skills, and innovative visions
  • Demonstrated abilities in recruiting and retaining members
  • Commitment to community engagement and outreach.
Compensation: Part-time, contract position. Compensation commensurate with experience.
